Thank You For the Music – A Review of Mamma Mia! The Party

This week some of the Door2Tour team were lucky enough to be invited to Mamma Mia! The Party – a new dining experience in a purpose built venue at the O2 Arena in London.

Having only opened in early September, this new show offers ABBA and Mamma Mia fans a night filled with ABBA’s infectious and uplifting music.

Following on from the success of the smash hit Musical and films, the experience begins as you enter ‘Nikos Taverna’ which is set on Skapelos – the Greek Island where Mamma Mia was filmed. With beautiful Greek pink Bougainvillea flowers, olive trees and a working fountain in the centre, the taverna courtyard is the perfect setting to enjoy the spectacular show. You do really feel as though you are entering Greece and they have gone into extreme detail to make the venue look as authentic as possible.

Over the course of four hours, guests enjoy on a four-course Mediterranean feast, menus do vary but when we visited we sampled the following. A mezze: selection of olives, cherry tomatoes, baked bread basket and more, followed by a starter of traditional Greek Salad, charred octopus and spanakopita. The main course: lamb kleftiko, beef flank with Mediterranean sauce and chargrilled vegetables with courgette, potatoes yiachni and desserts of Portokalopita orange cake with confit orange and yoghurt.

The West End style show begins just after the starter as you meet taverna owner Nikos and his family – throughout the night their story unfolds accompanied by some well loved songs from Mamma Mia including Waterloo (which the whole audience are encouraged to join in with – lyrics are printed in the menu!), The Winner Takes It All, Honey Honey,  and more.

After the show ends the dancefloor comes alive as an ABBA disco takes over.

All in all, Mamma Mia! The Party offers a fantastic night out for old and young – we’d highly recommend.
