Blackpool is a seaside resort that surprisingly doesn’t close its doors in the chilly autumn season. Why so? Because of the colourful and vibrant illuminations that are lit up for six miles along the prom. These are often referred to as the Northern Lights, and a celebrity switches them on every year, usually on the first Friday of September. They then remain on until November.
The illumination displays include the Lightpool, which was put on for the first time last year. The light show was projected in cycles from the Blackpool Tower. Others include the Strictly Come Dancing display (inspired by the Ballroom Glitz), the Glampire Re-Vamped, the Sea and Spray, and the Street to Shore.
How can you get to the event?
You can go by train or you can even drive if you are nearby. The best option, however, is to sign up for Blackpool Illumination coach holidays because they are affordable and fun. Tour operators take care of the accommodation and other arrangements, and the only thing left for you to do is to enjoy the show.
What should you do?
During the beginning days of the event, the lights are turned on at 8 pm, but towards the end, they are switched on by around 5 pm. A fun way to view them is to take the tram trip. If you want, you can also walk down to the South Pier where you’ll enjoy an impressive panorama.
Where should you eat?
There are many food and drink options available such as the Beach House and the Cottage. The Beach House is located right along the coast, offering chicken, steak, fish, pizza, pasta and more. The Cottage is beyond the back of the prom with fish and chips on the menu.
