Castlerigg consists of over 300 stone circles and is not just among the oldest but one of the best locations to visit on your coach holiday. It is one of Britain’s most impressive pre-historic monuments and it sits on a low hill to the east of Keswick with a ring of mountains surrounding it.

With uncluttered views; the stones are aligned with the tallest of the surrounding fells. Unlike many of England’s stone circles that date back to the Bronze age, dated between 200 – 800 BC, it was constructed around 3000 BC in the Neolithic period.

Honister Slate Mine

The Honister Slate Mine is the last running slate mine in England. It is still used for Westmorland green slate and has been going since 1728.

It is a very popular attraction, pulling in many visitors all year round. If you are looking for a real challenge you can go deep underground in the slate mine. This will have you scaling the mine walls, complete with vertical climbs, rope bridge crossings and steel ladder climbs. This gives you the chance to see where miners used to work over 100 years ago.

If you are not feeling so adventurous you can go on an easy going mine tour where you will get to have an experience rich adventure, delving deeps into the underground tunnels and caverns in the Fleetwith Pike. You will have the chance to listen to the story of an 8-year-old boy called John Taylor who describes his journey and how to mine slate and this was passed down to him over his lifetime.

The tours only take around 90 minutes and will have you exploring every inch in detail over uneven terrain and descending over 50 steps into the caverns.
