The Girls – Our Review

The GirlsRecently two of the Door2Tour Team Caroline and Kelly were lucky enough to secure tickets to see new West End musical ‘The Girls’ in London.

The Girls is the true story of Yorkshire’s very own Calendar Girls – a group of ladies who achieved something extraordinary. The story of the Calendar Girls all started back in 1998 when Angela Baker’s husband John was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma – a type of blood cancer. John sadly passed away a few short months later, but Angela and her friends set about creating their now infamous calendar. The calendar attracted national press attention and as a result, this group of extraordinary women have now raised millions of pounds for Bloodwise (formerly known as Lymphoma & Lymphoma Research).

The show is playing at the Phoenix Theatre in the heart of London’s West End. Kelly and Caroline were sat in row B of the Dress Circle and said that from here they had a great view of the whole show. They warn however, the seating is a little tight with limited leg room.

Gary Barlow created the music for the show and although neither knew any of the songs beforehand, our girls said the soundtrack was great with a real mixture of tempos.

In the current cast there are a few famous faces, Michele Dotrice from ‘Some Mothers Do ‘Ave Em’, James Gaddas who has starred in ‘Casualty’, ‘Coronation Street’, ‘Bad Girls’ and more plus Debbie Chazen who has been in various TV roles also.

Both Caroline and Kelly agree that the show was one of the best they had seen for a long time. The show is an emotional rollercoaster, you will be laughing one moment and feeling sad the next and both said they would definitely give the show 5 stars. And in case you were wondering… Yes, the cast were naked on stage however, it was very tastefully done behind props!
