Here at Door2Tour we love a night out at the Theatre and between us we have probably seen the majority of shows on offer in London. With so many different shows to choose from we thought we would run through some of our top picks to give you a little more insight – and to ultimately help you make your choice of what to see next!
Something for the Kids
With plenty of Musicals to choose from for the kids this Christmas and New Year we thought we’d pick our top shows for the whole family.
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Roald Dahl’s wonderful story of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory has been brought to life in a ‘deliciously dark’ tale of Charlie Bucket and the mysterious Willy Wonka. When Charlie wins a golden ticket in his bar of Wonka chocolate he wins the chance to visit the spectacular Wonka Chocolate Factory. The five lucky winners soon come to realise that everything is not as sweet as it may seem! With a combination of wonderful costumes, a great set and cast, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory will not leave fans disappointed!
Matilda the Musical
Multi-award winning Matilda the musical is a production from the Royal Shakespeare Company inspired by the beloved book Matilda from Roald Dahl. The original soundtrack was composed by comedian and songwriter Tim Minchin and perfectly illustrate the vivid imagination of Matilda, the extraordinary girl who dares to make a stand and change her own destiny. If you choose to visit Matilda you will not be left disappointed, the show has since opened in Australia and USA and continues to wow the crowds.
Wicked the Musical
Having opened in 2006, Wicked the Musical has become one of the longest running shows in the West End. It definitely isn’t a coincidence that Idina Menzel opened the show on Broadway and has gone on to become a household name for playing Elsa in Disney’s Frozen. Wicked explore the untold story of Oz, and how the Wicked Witch of the West may not be all that wicked after all. Lovers of the Wizard of Oz must go and see this fabulous production, which has left a green sparkle on the thousands of people who have seen it up and down the UK.
Something for Couples
A night out at the Theatre is perfect for date night, with a meal before and an evening being entertained you’ll have a great time whatever show you see. However, here are our top picks for couples:
Beautiful the Musical
The new Carole King Musical has become a real smash hit charting the music career of Carole King. With a collection of well-known songs such as ‘Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow’, ‘One Fine Day’ and ‘Take Good Care of my Baby’, you’ll be wanting to sing along. Beautiful tells the true story of King’s rise to stardom, her marriage to Gerry Goffin and relationship with best friends, onto to her rise to fame to become one of the most famous solo artists. We’re plenty certain you’ll love Beautiful the Musical – so be sure not to miss out.
Phantom of the Opera
Beneath the splendour of the Paris Opera House, hides the Phantom living a shadowy existence. Embarassed by his appearance and feared by all, the love her has for Christina Daae is so strong even she cannot resist. Phantom opened in the West End in 1986 and now in its record-breaking 30th year it continues to captivate audiences in the West End.
Les Miserables
The legendary production of Les Miserables has become a global sensation, showing in a massive 44 countries and 22 languages the production will celebrate its 30th Anniversary on 8th October. Set during the French Revolution Les Mis tells the story of unrequited love, broken dreams and sacrifice, passion and redemption. Ex-convict Jean Valjean is hunted by policeman Javert after breaking parole. When Valjean agrees to take care of a factory workers young daughter, their lives change forever.
Last chance to see
Sadly, shows come and go from the West End, some stay longer than others but the latest casualty to be leaving the West End is War Horse.
War Horse
We’re all sad that classic play War Horse is closing in 2016. Warhorse explores the story of Joey, a beloved horse of Albert, who is sold to the cavalry. Albert unable to forget this horse embarks on a treacherous mission to find him and return him home. We’re sure there won’t be a dry eye in the house…
