On Location with the Great British Bake Off

CakeTonight sees our final outing to the Great British Bake Off Tent for another nail-biting final. Who comes out victorious remains a mystery for the moment, but in the office we’ve got our money on Nadiya (and if not her then definitely Tamal or Ian!). With so many fabulous creations throughout the series (not forgetting the disasters too) we thought we’d select some of our favourite bakes to discover a little bit more about where they originate from and go on location.

Week 2 – Biscuit Week – Arlettes

The Week 2 technical challenge saw the Bakers taking on Arlettes, thin wafers of caramelised puff pastry which originated from the South of France. We have plenty of coach holidays to France which will allow you to sample an arlette from its true origins. Enjoy some sunshine on a break to the French Riviera, explore the wonderful cities of Nice, Monte Carlo and St Tropez. Some tours available incorporatethe wonderful Cote d’Azur too, breaks are also available by air from selected regional airports.

Week 4 – Dessert Week – Spanische Windtorte

The fourth week brought another challenge to the Bake Off Tent, this time in the shape of the Spanische Windtorte. A famous Austrian dessert which is renowned for being particularly tricky to master and is compiled of layers of meringue and whipped cream. With plenty of escorted tours and coach holidays to Austria you are bound to find somewhere to sample a Windtorte. Perhaps explore the alpine landscape on a rail adventure break or maybe the famous lakes of the Tyrol including Hallstatt – the picture perfect Austrian Village.

Week 6 – Pastry Week – Flaouna

This week’s technical challenge was another mystery to the bakers with the remaining asked to make Flaounas. These tasty pastry treats originate from Cyprus and tend to be eaten around Easter and Ramadan. Cyprus is one of our lesser visited destinations, but the island offers stunning landscapes dotted with fascinating wildlife and architectural gems. The year round sunshine makes it an attractive destination for those looking for some history and sunnier climes.

Week 7 – Victorian Week – Charlotte Russe

The seventh week saw the downfall of Mat the fireman and a showstopper of a Charlotte Russe, this custard based dessert is said to have been created in France by Marie-Antonin Careme. However, its name has strong ties to Russia with the word ‘Russe’ meaning Russia in French. At Door2Tour this is many opportunities to visit Russia on an escorted tour or on an ocean cruise. Many cruises allow you to visit the Baltic Cities and St Petersburg whilst enjoying the comfort of your cruise ship.

Week 8 – Patisserie Week – Mokatines

Patisserie week left us all with a longing to visit the streets of Paris to explore the fabulous selection of cakes and treats available. The Mokatines created in this week’s technical challenge looked just as scrumptious as any other cake. With ties back to Belgium, it is easy to try these cakes whilst visiting. We have plenty of coach trips to Belgium at Door2Tour, including the popular destinations of Bruges and Brussels, but also lesser kChocolatesnown resorts such as Ostend and Antwerp. With breaks by coach and Eurostar there is nothing stopping you from taking a short hop across the Channel to enjoy a weekend break.

Week 9 – Chocolate Week – Chocolate

Week 9 left us all craving chocolate after the remaining competitors had three chocolate based creations to make. Although Belgium looks like the obvious choice for any chocolate lovers, we also have lots of breaks available to Cadbury World in Birmingham. A paradise for any chocolate fans, Cadbury World allows visitors to see their favourite chocolate creations being moulded whilst enjoying some samples along the way.

We aren’t sure what the final three bakers will be creating tonight, but needless to say I am sure they will be equally delicious as in previous weeks. Here’s to a good final!
