State occasions and military events are a great way of celebrating while in London. Should you be lucky enough to be in London during the events, you can expect to experience a range of ceremonial events that are of ritual significance. The following are some of the military events to keep an eye out for in 2016.
Beating Retreat
The Beating Retreat takes place on two successive evenings during June at Horse Guards Parade. This event is a pageant of precision military drills and military music which is executed by a group of Mounted Bands of the Household Cavalry along with the Massed Bands of the Household Division, which also features some guest performances as well. You can purchase tickets to the event from the Guards Museum or online from sites such as Ticketmaster.
State Opening of Parliament
The State Opening of Parliament ceremony takes place at the House of Lords where the Queen gives her annual speech before the new session of parliament is commenced. At the ceremony the Queen travels to Westminster Abbey from Buckingham Palace by taking the Royal Route in the Irish State Coach which is escorted by the Household Cavalry.
Accompanied by military bands, the parade is led by the Guard of Honour from the Foot Guards, which makes a truly spectacular sight. Street Liners also guard the entire route and preset arms as the Queen passes the route. The State Opening of Parliament is one of the most anticipated military events of the year and is definitely worth the visit if you’re in London.
So, these are the two main military events of London to look forward to in 2016. Make sure you get your tickets online in advance if you plan on making it to London during these events.
