If you haven’t been on a coach holiday to Northumberland yet you really don’t know what you are missing. The astounding Heritage coast is a designated area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and for a very good reason. Sprinkled along the 30 miles of coastline you will be able to visit many pretty fishing villages and also some picturesque sandy coves such as Low Newton by the Sea and Breadnell.
You will find yourself losing track of time here as for those of you who like a good stomp. There are many beautiful walks around the area. You can walk along the expansive dune-fringed golden beaches whilst breathing in all the fresh air and hopefully enjoying the sunshine (although we cannot guarantee this sadly!) Whilst exploring on foot, those nature lovers out there can keep your eyes peeled for some of the local wildlife in the water including; migrating seabirds and grey seals. They’ll be plentiful opportunity to see guillemots and puffins. If you love wildlife, take a trip to the Farne Islands for a closer look.
Northumberland has many stunning castles for you to visit which are hugely impressive and worth a visit. Many coach trip visitors venture to Alnwick Castle, which is often known as the Windsor of the North. Here you can follow in the footsteps of the Downton Abbey cast and the stars of Harry Potter. The garden at Alnwick Castle is worth a visit for its quirky features and flowing waterfalls. Another favourite castle in the area is Bamburgh Castle which is boasts a formidable fortress set against the golden sands below. Make sure you take your camera to this one!
Be sure to visit the Holy Islands. On Lindisfarne you can discover the history of the Lindisfarne gospels amongst the ancient priory ruin and take a trip to the Islands castle too. Rest assured there is plenty to do on the Island. Make sure you pick up some of the local brewed mead whilst there, we guarantee it’s like nothing you’ve tried before. An excellent present for family at home too.
Not to forget the world-famous Hadrian’s Wall is a must see whilst in the area. Built almost 2,000 years ago this is the Roman’s biggest building project. There is plenty of history for you to enjoy here.
If you are unlucky with the weather whilst in Northumberland there are many attractions you can still enjoy. Take a trip to the Woodhorn museum which is home to a fascinating exhibition on the mining heritage in Northumberland and it hosts many interactive exhibitions too.
A delightful beach worth visiting is Bamburgh beach, with the castle on one side and the Lindisfarne Island on the other, this is a dramatic location for you to blow away the cobwebs!
If you like to explore some of the local towns in Northumberland, take a trip to Hexham. Hexham was once the haunt of monks and Vikings. The winding streets now have a lot to enjoy ranging from many art galleries where you can soak up the culture of the local area. There is also an annual Book Festival held here.
For a more remote experience visit Kielder Water and Forest Park. Here you can experience nature on a grand scale. This area boasts the biggest man-made lake in Europe and also the largest planted forest in England with a gigantic forest of over 150 million trees.
If you have little ones with you on your coach holiday take a trip to Northumberland Country Zoo. There are plenty of animals for them get up close and personal with and a great adventure land play area for them to burn off any excess energy. Adults will enjoy the zoo too!
