Ever since the Royal Horticulture Society has announced that the tickets are on sale, it seems that everyone wants to go to the Chelsea Flower Show 2017. The Chelsea Flower Show is one of the biggest flower shows in the world and has some of the best floral displays and garden designs that you will ever see. If you are going to visit it for the first time, here are a few things that you should know about it:
It Dates Back to the 1800s
The history of the show dates back to 1862, but back then it was known as the RHS Great Spring Show. The show was held in the Temple Gardens between 1888 and 1911. It was in the year 1913 that it moved to its current location.
It is the Second Largest Flower Show
The largest flower show is the RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show that takes place during the month of July at the grounds of Hampton Court Palace.
Its Current Location Is Huge
The Great Pavilion is stretched over 2.90 acres and it is big enough to accommodate almost 500 buses.
It Takes a Month to Arrange
It takes almost 33 days and 800 people to arrange the whole event.
Australia is Pretty Famous
Australia has brought almost 11 shows to Chelsea and has won one best in the show award, six silver gilt medals, and five gold medals.
Judging is Not Easy
Each garden is examined for almost 45 minutes and the panel of judges’ debate with each other in order to decide the winners.
The No Gnome Policy
Garden gnomes were not allowed in the show until the year 2013.
Some Exhibits Are Really Old
Two of the firms that exhibited in 1913 are still showing now. Hillier’s Nursery has been exhibiting for 71 years and has won 71 gold medals so far.
