This week the World will be looking at wonderful Windsor as Prince Harry weds Ms. Meghan Markle in a ceremony on Saturday 19th May 2018. To celebrate we’ve spent some time compiling some lesser known facts about the famous Berkshire Royal Borough and it’s visitor attractions.
Windsor Castle
Windsor Castle is a royal residence in the English county of Berkshire. It is the largest and oldest inhabited Castle in the world and has been a family home to Kings and Queens for nearly 1000 years. Originally, the castle was built in the 11th Century by William the Conqueror.
During World War Two Windsor Castle was home to the Royal Family as they were evacuated from Blitz torn London. It has recently come to light that some of the Crown Jewels Collection was also hidden deep under Windsor Castle in a biscuit tin following fears of a Nazi invasion.
Just like at Buckingham Palace, Changing of the Guard can be seen at Windsor Castle at 11am every day in April – July.
In 1992, there was a large fire at Windsor Castle, it took firefighters 15 hours to distinguish the flames and around 20% of the Castle area was destroyed. As firefighters were battling the flames staff were busy removing works of art from the Royal Collection from the fire’s path. It then became a pain-staking task to restore the damaged rooms to their 14th Century appearance with a 20th Century reinterpretation. The restoration was officially completed on 20th November 1997, 5 years to the day after the fire.
St George’s Chapel
The St George’s Chapel in Windsor has been used for a number of Royal Weddings, most famously for a blessing between Prince Charles and Camilla Parker-Bowles.
Later this year St George’s Chapel will also host the wedding of Princess Eugenie of York and Jack Brooksbank on the 12th October.
Legoland
Perhaps the lesser thought of visitor attraction in Windsor is Legoland with 55 attractions, shows and rides to keep the kids entertained. To celebrate the upcoming Royal Wedding a 40,000 LEGO brick Windsor Castle has been added to Miniland along with models of the happy couple, the Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh and the rest of the Royal Family.
