The Chelsea Flower Show is more than just your average pretty flower show. Through the years, this particular flower show has become a major event that kicks off the annual spring season. Just like all of our fingers aren’t the same size, all displays at the Chelsea Flower Show have not been created the same, with many spectacular floral displays being displayed at the event through the years, the following have made it to our top five list.
The Fáilte Ireland/Cork City Council Garden
Design; Diarmuid Gavin
Year: 2011
Gavin’s 2011’s masterpiece is still talked about to this day. The Irish Sky Garden was created after the designer got inspired by the Hollywood movie Avatar, which was evident in its design. The display featured s wing shaped pod which was suspended almost 60 feet above the ground, thus making it the Chelsea Flower Show’s first ever mid air show garden, which was quite a feat. While being a controversial entry to the show, it did however bag Chelsea Gold, which made it all worth it.
The Telegraph Garden
Designer; Cleve West
Year: 2011
West’s sunken garden design, which was inspired by his trip to Libya got him his third consecutive win at the Chelsea Flower Show 2011. The design made good use of a rough stone path and tall stone columns which was topped off with an exceptional display of flowers and herbs.
Trailfinders Garden
Designer; Phillip Johnson
Year: 2013
Phillip Johnson wowed the crowd at the 2013 Chelsea Flower Show with his “Australian Garden”. The display included a natural swimming pool, a suspended artist’s studio, and a rock operated shower, which definitely made it one of the unique flower displays at the show.
National Lottery Garden
Designer; Diarmuid Gavin
Year: 2004
Gavin’s “Colourful Suburban Eden” display is considered to be one of the wackiest displays at the Chelsea Flower Show with shiny, multi-coloured balls that were sprouting out of the garden atop thin black coloured stalks, which was enough to get it the silver gilt medal. Good stuff!
Laurent Perrier Garden
Designer; Luciano Giubbilei
Year: 2011
The 2011 gold medal winner, Laurent Perrier Garden was the brainchild of Luciano Giubbilei. The display was a combined effort by British sculptor Peter Randall-Page and renowned Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, which played upon the interaction between humans and nature.
