For those who love heights there are plenty of great spots in the UK, where you can get that great view, without having to leave our shores.
The View from Shard
The tallest building in the UK and Europe is the Shard in London, at a height of 309m it towers over the rest of the London Skyline and is visible from the majority of the city. With a unique viewing platform at the top open to visitors, those with a head for height can enjoy views stretching for miles on a clear day. With views of the Tower of London, Buckingham Palace, Battersea Power Station, the Walkie Talkie and the Leadenhall buildings there is plenty to admire.
Visitors take two speedy lifts from the ground floor up to the 72nd floor where they are free to spend as much time as they please admiring the views. With champagne on hand, you can really marvel at hundreds of years of history. Each visitor will also receive their own hand set explaining more about the sights, landmarks and the tower itself.
Tower Bridge
For a different height another place to visit is the Tower Bridge Exhibition, the newly opened experience allows visitors to admire the stunning 120 year old landmark. Unique for being built with moveable road ways to allow ships to pass it has turned into one of London’s best known icons. It even housed the Olympic Rings during London 2012. The bridge is raised around 850 times a year and has to be available to be opened 365 days a year, day or night.
Visitors to the bridge can now experience panoramic glass floors from the high-level walkways. They are enough to make the bravest persons legs wobble – believe me even I was scared!
Spinnaker Tower
The Emirates Spinnaker Tower is a huge landmark on the edge of the Solent in Portsmouth. Towering over the harbour and surrounding city it is the centrepiece of the redevelopment a striking white point on the skyline. With views stretching up to 23 miles on a clear day, the views are truly stunning. Deck 1 is 100m in the air and includes a glass floor allowing you to look down below at the sea!
Sky Garden
London’s hottest new bar the Sky Garden at 20 Fenchurch Street has become highly sought after opening recently. The large domed windows offer great views over the city spread across three levels of landscaped public gardens. Visitors can wander around the exquisite gardens and the open-air terrace offering a rare chance to experience London from another vantage point. Visiting is free of charge, however a limited number of tickets are available so book before you go.
Edinburgh Castle
A little different from the traditional skyscraper, Edinburgh Castle is set a steep top hill which offers fabulous views over Edinburgh and the surrounding area. With bucket loads of history, Edinburgh Castle is the landmark of Scotland’s Capital City. The Castle also plays host to the world famous Edinburgh Military Tattoo each August with thousands of visitors coming to watch a spectacular display of military force.
