I’ve recently returned from a staycation in the sunny South West of England, St Austell in Cornwall to be precise and what a fantastic destination it is! With rolling hills, sandy beaches and gourmet local food to die for, this destination is great for everyone.
The town of St Austell itself has all the local amenities you needed for a stay including food shops (butchers, bakers and supermarkets), art and crafts shops and an abundance of pubs and restaurants leaving you spoilt for choice at meal time. Not to mention a bustling harbour, a number of great beaches and plenty of coastal paths to explore.
I was particularly excited to be based just a short drive from the Eden Project, hidden in what used to be a clay pit. These famous domes house the UK’s biggest Rainforest and a display dedicated to the Mediterranean and USA. Outside there are plenty of picturesque gardens with a variety of fabulous plants and flowers. And although I didn’t sample it apparently, the food which is all locally and ethically sourced is delicious!
There are a number of fabulous beaches close by too and if the weather is good they are bound to be packed with sun seekers. We enjoyed a particularly fine afternoon in the late summer sun stretched out on the sand followed by a go in a kayak. Paddling around what I think is the English Channel was particularly enjoyable and you even felt like you were abroad.
Whilst away I sampled a number great things to eat including a traditional Cornish Pasty which was recommended to me. It was particularly lovely and came from a local butchers, so it might be wise to try them if you are in the area as they tend to be made freshly. I also sampled some lovely fish and chips one evening, the fish was fresh and tasted great.
To be entirely honest, we could have gorged ourselves on cream teas, pasties and ice cream for the entirety of our stay, but we tried to be good.
I had a fantastic time exploring this little corner of England and I hope if you are ever lucky enough to visit you will too!
