Oxford is an excellent place for you to visit on part of a city coach tour. Oxford has many attractions for you to visit and many of the attractions are located around the compact city centre. Being a university town, Oxford’s university is made up of 38 colleges, each giving host to plenty of character. Christ Church and Magdalen are the two of the grandest colleges but many of the smaller colleges offer intimacy. After the colleges you can soak up culture in one of the many museums and modern art galleries or take a trip to one of the many bustling markets.
A trip to the Pitt Rivers Museum is certainly worth a visit, it hosts a real treasure trove of magical charms, blowpipes and trophy scalps. There are many curious objects to be found here from all around the world. This an excellent place for children to explore and they can utilise a torch and seek out toy mice that are hidden amongst the exhibits.
If architecture is more your thing then visiting the cobbled Radcliffe Square is a must and this is the heart of the university. In this area there are 3 architectural charms: the 15th century Bodleian library, the university Church of St Mary the Virgin (which has fantastic views from the top) and the Palladian- style Radcliffe Camera.
For those of you who like to be outside, take a trip to the Oxford Botanic Garden and Arboretum which is a beautiful haven for peace and quiet. The walled garden houses scientific and heritage collections. Many plants and species are labelled for additional information.
For you historians out there, visit Oxford’s 1000 year old castle and former prison both of which have been redeveloped. The original castle is now open as a museum which tells the castle’s story from 1071 until 1996.
If you enjoy a classical music concert then you can experience the Holywell Music Room which has been famous for hosting many recitals for more than 250 years and it is said to be the oldest custom built concert hall in Europe.
By far the best way to explore the city is on foot. Partake in a walking tour where the tour will reveal insights into the city’s history. For something different you can experience a themed tour such as Alice in Wonderland or Inspector Morse.
As you’ll be greatly aware Oxford in well known for the Boating races yearly. Why not hire a punt from one of the three punt stations on the River Thames and float serenely past the college gardens and through to the countryside and meadows. If you fancy an excursion out of the city why not visit the stunning Blenheim Palace? This extravagant mansion is a World Heritage Site which is surrounded by Capability Brown Parkland. Originally created for the Duke of Marlborough John Churchill. It later became the birthplace of Winston Churchill.
Just a few 20 miles away you can take a trip to the Cotswolds and have high tea in Burford. Burford hosts one of the best medieval wool churches in the country. There are many tearooms and antiques shops to visit in the village.
